The Body Image & Therapy Training Program is tailored to assist therapists working in community mental health agencies in effectively addressing clients’ body image concerns. This training aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to effectively work with a diverse range of clients, spanning from children (aged 6-12 years), adolescents (aged 13-18 years), to transitional aged youth (aged 18-25 years), encompassing various genders and ethnic backgrounds. Through this program, therapists will receive clinical tools tailored to assist in treatment and will learn to integrate evidence-based interventions focused on addressing body image concerns. The agenda covers an array of topics, including an overview of body image issues (Neagu, 2015; Fardouly & Vartanian, 2016; Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015), strategies for treatment and interventions to address body image concerns, as well as the provision of relevant resources for therapists.

The body image overview will incorporate psychoeducation concerning the intersectionality of body-related factors like age and developmental knowledge (Kurther, 2024; Pesu, Viljaranta, & Aunola, 2016), gender awareness (von Soest, Wichstrøm, & Kvalem, 2016), and cultural humility, aiming to deepen understanding of the mental health implications of body image issues (Gillen & Markey, 2015). This will include tools for distinguishing body image issues from eating disorders and implementing strategies for integrative care to connect clients with appropriate services (Cornelissen & Tovée, 2021). Clinicians will receive training in supporting clients with body image concerns through diverse treatment modalities, including evidence-based practices, cognitive behavioral therapy (Lewis-Smith, Diedrichs, & Halliwell, 2019), mindfulness (Khoshkerdar & Raeisi, 2020; Atkinson & Wade, 2019), family systems theory, collaborative care, and therapeutic art techniques.

Event held online via Zoom, link to access provided upon registration.

This program, when attended in its entirety, offers 1.5 CEs for Psychologists, 1.5 IL CEUS for Counselors and Social Workers, or 1.5 BBS California CEUs for LPCCs, LPSW, and LMFTs.
