DBT Lite Training

This program is a 7-day comprehensive introduction to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy “Lite”. This training will focus on mindfulness and emotion regulation modules. Additionally, it will focus on interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance modules. Participants will walk through the entire DBT manual and will have hands-on experience with the content and exercises for each module.
This program, when attended in its entirety, offers 14.0 CEs for Psychologists, 14.0 IL CEUS for Counselors and Social Workers, 14.0 BBS California CEUs for LPCCs, LPSW, and LMFTs, 14.0 NASP CPDs for School Psychologists, or 14.0 ISBE CPDs for Illinois Educators, and the DBT Lite Digital Badge.
This DBT Lite training does not meet the requirements for DBT Certification.

After attending this introductory-level program, participants will be able to:
- Identify who Dr. Marsha Linehan is and why she created DBT.
- Identify the 4 major modules of DBT and how they fit together.
- Identify who the treatment is relevant for and how to determine what types of skills are most useful for a particular clinical presentation.
- Explain the wisemind skill.
- Explain the what and how skills.
- Identify what types of mindfulness activities are relevant in what types of situations.
- Utilize loving kindness exercises appropriately.
- Present and explain the DBT model of emotions.
- Discuss the “ABC PLEASE” skills.
- Present the concept of “riding the wave” of emotion.
- Describe the opposite to emotion action skill and how to utilize it in various contexts.
- Utilize the pleasant activities list and how to engage students in creating their own lists.
- Utilize letting go of painful emotions skills within the present moment.
- Utilize the DEAR MAN skill.
- Describe GIVE and FAST skills and how they fit with DEAR MAN.
- Describe myths of interpersonal effectiveness and how to support clients in challenging them.
- Support clients in creating new relationships and ending old ones that may not be working using a DBT lens.
- Explain the Wise Mind ACCEPTS skill and how to teach others to distract from distress.
- Utilize the Willingness & Half Smile skill and use these to physiologically evoke change in times of distress.
- Utilize the concept of radical acceptance & turning the mind and how to use all the other skills in combination to achieve this high level distress tolerance.
This program meets APA’s continuing education STANDARD 1.3: Program content focuses on topics related to psychological practice, education, or research other than application of psychological assessment and/or intervention methods that are supported by contemporary scholarship grounded in established research procedures.
This program meets APA’s continuing education GOAL 1: Program is relevant to psychological practice, education, and/or science.

Rachel Nitzarim, PhD
Dr. Rachel Nitzarim is the Director of Clinical Training at The Chicago School Clinical PsyD Department and the owner of Rosewatter Chicagoland Counseling, PLLC. Dr. Nitzarim has been engaging with DBT since her graduate school days while both training extensively in and running DBT groups. She runs a DBT experiential class each spring for her Clinical PsyD students that has the students choose a character and learn all of the DBT skills in a 16-week course.
Sara Taxman, PsyD
Sara Taxman graduated from the Chicago School last year and worked with Dr. Nitzarim as her TA for the DBT experiential course for 3 years. She is currently a post-doc at Northwestern University’s family institute where she is utilizing full protocol DBT with her patients. She has undergone extensive training in DBT both through her PsyD program and prior and has a mastery over the material and how to implement it with younger adult/adolescent populations.

Audience: Mental health professionals in school systems.
Psychologists. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 14.0 continuing education credits. MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs. Course meets the qualifications for 14.0 hour of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. If you are licensed outside of California please check with your local licensing agency to to determine if they will accept these CEUs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer continuing education programming for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is an accredited or approved postsecondary institution that meets the requirements set forth in Sections 4980.54(f)(1), 4989.34, 4996.22(d)(1), or 4999.76(d) of the Code.
School Psychologists. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 14.0 hours of continuing professional development. Illinois Educators. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 14.0 hours of continuing professional development units. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is an approved provider for continuing professional development by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Non-Psychologists. Most licensing boards accept Continuing Education Credits sponsored by the American Psychological Association but non-psychologists are recommended to consult with their specific state-licensing board to ensure that APA-sponsored CE is acceptable.
