Course Descrption
This workshop will review the competencies necessary for proper identification and treatment options for clients dealing with substance abuse concerns. Information will be provided on Substance Use Disorder concerns and symptoms. In addition, case examples will provide information about specific ways clients present themselves and the impact substance abuse can have on their mental health and daily life concerns. Finally, a discussion of appropriate skills will allow clinicians to walk away with the necessary tools and techniques for incorporating this knowledge into daily practice.
This presentation will use case examples to demonstrate specific tools and strategies and handouts for screening of substance abuse concerns. This presentation aims to encourage clinicians to develop competencies that enable them to better screen and intervene with substance use to ensure well-rounded care.
Objectives
After completing this introductory level program, participants will be able to
- Explain substance abuse concerns and symptoms.
- Describe specific ways clients present themselves and the impact substance abuse can have on their mental health and daily life concerns.
- Apply the necessary tools and techniques for incorporating SUD knowledge into daily practice

Courtney J. Kibble, Psy.D., Program Director/Assistant Professor
Courtney Kibble, Psy.D., HSP, LP, LPC, CADC is the Program Director and an Assistant Professor in the Addiction Studies and Behavioral Health department at Governors State University. She supervises students during internship and specializes in trauma and substance use. Her training in trauma and substance use disorders comes from her years working for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Working with dual-diagnosis clients has been her passion since her first experience working with college students at the beginning of her training years. Additional experiences include: trauma training, promoting dual diagnosis concerns, and development/delivery of Peer Recovery Support education program.
