This course provides an overview of the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other common dementias, strategies for their management and care, and effective communication methods for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
Participants will gain an understanding of common signs and symptoms of dementia, and diagnostic criteria used in the evaluation process. A review of communication challenges faced by individuals with dementia will be offered. Additionally, this course provides insights into the management and care planning for individuals with dementia. Topics such as behavioral management techniques, pharmacological interventions, and community resources will be covered, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to provide support for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

After completing this introductory level program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other common dementias.
- Explain approaches to care planning for individuals showing signs and symptoms of dementia.
- Discuss essential strategies for adapting communication styles, utilizing non-verbal cues, and employing person-centered approaches to foster positive connections with individuals with dementia and their families

Janina Kamm, Psy.D
Dr. Kamm is a clinical neuropsychologist who works with patients across the lifespan. She earned her Psy.D. from TCSPP in 2015. She completed a two-year clinical and research fellowship in the area of neuropsychology within the Benton Neuropsychology Clinic at the University of Iowa, working under the supervision and mentorship of Daniel Tranel, Ph.D. ABPP. Dr. Kamm has experience working with diverse patient populations in a variety of clinical settings, including VA Hospitals, academic medical centers, and private practice. Dr. Kamm’s applied research interests focus on understanding and predicting post-surgical cognitive outcomes for children and adults undergoing neurosurgical treatment.
