Workshop Description:

Hypnosis and hypnotic-like procedures have now been used for hundreds of years and yet myths and misunderstandings still seem to make therapists hesitate to add this useful modality to their skill set.

This presentation will briefly review the history and myths of hypnosis and then focus on the many practical reasons to add hypnosis as an adjunctive technique in clinical practice. The data in the presentation is drawn from years of interviews with the leading figures in hypnosis who were all asked “Why study hypnosis?”

There will be a Q&A session at the end of the webinar where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. A PowerPoint document will be shared. A facilitator will moderate specific questions to reach outcome goals.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this introductory-level webinar participants will be able to:

1. List 3 common myths about hypnosis.

2. Describe 3 advantages of learning hypnotic techniques

3. Describe hypnosis to patients/clients appropriately.

Professional Bio of Presenter, Eric Willmarth, PhD, Saybrook University

Eric Willmarth, PhD, is the Co-Chair of the Department of Applied Psychophysiology and the Coordinator for the Integrative Mental Health Specialization in the College of Integrative Medicine and Health, Saybrook University, in Pasadena. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and has worked for over three decades in the area of chronic pain management. He is certified in biofeedback, clinical hypnosis, and pain management. He is currently the President-Elect of the Society for Psychological Hypnosis (APA Div. 30) and President of the Michigan Society for Clinical Hypnosis. He has served in the past as the President of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, The American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, and the Michigan Society for Behavioral Medicine and Biofeedback. Beginning college as a music major, he played bassoon in the orchestra, trombone in the jazz band, and guitar in a rock band. He continues to be interested in the psychology and health benefits of music and continues to sing in his church choir. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 40 years and has two sons and three grandsons. Life is good!

STANDARD 1.1: Program content focuses on application of psychological assessment and/or intervention methods that have overall consistent and credible empirical support in the contemporary peer reviewed scientific literature beyond those publications and other types of communications devoted primarily to the promotion of the approach.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

Psychologists. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 1.5 continuing education credits. MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs. Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hour of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. If you are licensed outside of California please check with your local licensing agency to to determine if they will accept these CEUs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer continuing education programming for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is an accredited or approved postsecondary institution that meets the requirements set forth in Sections 4980.54(f)(1), 4989.34, 4996.22(d)(1), or 4999.76(d) of the Code.

Other Non Psychologists. Most licensing boards accept Continuing Education Credits sponsored by the American Psychological Association but non-psychologists are recommended to consult with their specific state-licensing board to ensure that APA-sponsored CE is acceptable.

Participation Certificate The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is able to provide students and other participants who simply wish to have documentation of their attendance at the program a participation certificate.
