It is important to understand more than the prescribed code of ethics for each profession. A thorough understanding of the history and evolution of ethics puts the need for guidelines and boundaries into perspective. Awareness of the intersection of the law, morality and ethical decision-making is imperative.
This workshop will address those considerations and more. It will provide provocative examples of how to use ethics as a personal and professional guide. Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors and Therapists have one common mandate – to facilitate client wellness. Remaining objective, while displaying empathy can only be accomplished when certain boundaries are in place. This course will assist participants shape boundaries that are comfortable for them.

This program, when attended in its entirety, offers 3.0 CEs for Psychologists, 3.0 IL CEUS for Counselors and Social Workers, or 3.0 BBS California CEUs for LPCCs, LPSW, and LMFTs.

After attending this introductory-level program, participants will be able to:
1. Define and discuss the need for ethics as a competency in the professions
2. Identify and describe the evolution of ethical Models for Application today
3. Analyze concrete examples of ethical violations with clients
4. List 2 ethical considerations specific to telehealth practice
This program meets APA’s continuing education Standard 1.3: Program content focuses on topics related to psychological practice, education, or research other than application of psychological assessment and/or intervention methods that are supported by contemporary scholarship grounded in established research procedures.
This program meets APA’s continuing education Goal 3: Program will allow psychologists to maintain, develop, and increase competencies in order to improve services to the public and enhance contributions to the profession.

AJM holds a PhD IN Ethics/Public Administration. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Dr. McGowan has dedicated her career helping individuals and families who struggle. As a national thought leader in the fields of ethics and human trafficking she has presented for such groups as the American Museum Association Conference, and has published many articles, including “Ethics of Procuring Native American land for Government purposes”.
A passionate advocate and mental health provider, Dr. McGowan is an advisory board member for the Illinois statewide citizen’s committee for abuse and neglect of children, Chair of the task force for Children of Domestic Violence Steering Committee of Chicago Says No More, and serves on the Governor’s Advisory council to the director of DCFS.

Target Audience: All mental health professionals, particularly those who run their own practice. Graduate students welcome.
Psychologists. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 3.0 continuing education credits. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Counselors/Clinical Counselors. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 3.0 hours of continuing education. MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs. Course meets the qualifications for 3.0 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. If you are licensed outside of California please check with your local licensing agency to to determine if they will accept these CEUs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer continuing education programming for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is an accredited or approved postsecondary institution that meets the requirements set forth in Sections 4980.54(f)(1), 4989.34, 4996.22(d)(1), or 4999.76(d) of the Code.
Non-Psychologists. Most licensing boards accept Continuing Education Credits sponsored by the American Psychological Association but non-psychologists are recommended to consult with their specific state-licensing board to ensure that APA-sponsored CE is acceptable.
