This webinar will address the ethical competencies expected of professional counselors working with LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in the area of sexuality and sexual wellness. This presentation will integrate applied ethics as it relates to counseling practice with LGBTQ+ individuals in a variety of clinical settings.
The webinar will explore issues such as boundaries, establishing professional relationships within the LGBTQ+ and counseling settings, value conflicts with clients, LGBTQ+ clients and social media and how to integrate the SAIGE LGBQQIA competencies with the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics.

After attending this intermediate-level program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe SAIGE LGBQQIA Competencies and how they integrate with the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics.
2. Apply SAIGE LGBQQIA competencies and code of ethics to practitioners working with LGBTQ+ individuals.
3. Examine strategies and interventions, such as ethical bracketing strategy, the Counselor Values-Based Conflict Model (CVCM, and the LGBQQIA competencies to help maneuver through value conflicts within the therapeutic relationship with LGBTQ+ clients.
4. Identify specific strategies that can be applied to working with LGBTQ+ clients and to deal with conflicts based on value differences within the counseling relationship.
5. Address ethical practice regarding issues of sexuality and sexual wellness with LGBTQ+ individuals.
This program meets APA’s continuing education standard 1.2: Program content focuses on the ethical, legal, statuatory or reglatory policies, guidelines, and standards that impact psychological practice, education or research.
This program meets APA’s continuing education goal 3: Program will allow psychologists to maintain, develop, and increase competencies in order to improve services to the public and enhance contributions to the profession.

Michael M. Kocet, Ph.D.
Michael M. Kocet is Professor and Department Chair of the Counselor Education Department at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Kocet earned his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Arkansas. He is a licensed mental health counselor, a Board Certified Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. He is a Fellow of the American Counseling Association, the profession’s highest award for contributions to the profession. Professional areas of interest include: ethics, LGBTQ issues, grief counseling, and cooking therapy. He is the editor of the book, “Counseling Gay Men, Adolescents, and Boys” published by Routledge Press and is co-author of the text “Ethical Decision Making for the 21st Century Counselor” by SAGE Press. Dr. Kocet served as member of the ACA Ethics Committee (2001-2007) and chaired the ACA Ethics Code Revision Taskforce (2002-2005). He is Past President of the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE). Dr. Kocet provides pro bono counseling at the Center on Halsted, an LGBTQ Community Center in Chicago. He is sought out as a national speaker and consultant on ethics, diversity, LGBTQ, and grief counseling.
