The DSM–5–TR serves as the federal government’s official manual for the diagnosing of mental disorders. The literature presented with the text provides practicing clinicians with research, current codes, and criteria for diagnosing mental disorders and other conditions. This program will provide a review of the chapters, cover changes from the DSM to the DSM-TR, and offer a refresher for the practicing clinician.
This workshop will present an overview of the diagnostic criteria for Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5 TR with a review of the changes made in the DSM-5-TR. In addition, this category will be placed within a historical, social and cultural context. Finally, there will be a brief overview of some current research on substance use disorders.

- Identify the historical and current factors that affect the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders.
- Identify the diagnostic criteria in the Addiction and Substance Use Disorders section of the DSM-5 TR.
- Describe some of the trends in current research on substance use disorders.

Melody Bacon, Ph.D.
Melody Bacon, PhD has taught in the MFT program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology for over 13 years and in graduate programs for over 25 years. She has led a study abroad program to Zurich, Switzerland on Spirituality and Addiction which explores the ideas of C.G. Jung and how this is applied to the nature of substance use disorders. In addition to teaching, she also has a private practice specializing in relationship issues and is the author of two books, The Grace-Filled Divorce (2012) and Family Therapy and the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders (2019). She is co-founder of The Family Matters program, an online program for families struggling with substance use disorders. She has presented at numerous conferences and workshops including AAMFT, International Family Therapy Association (IFTA), California Consortium of Addiction Program and Professionals (CCAPP) and the Raise Foundation Conference.
Target Audience: Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and School Psychologists.
Psychologists. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 1.0 continuing education credits. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology maintains responsibility for this program and its content. If you are licensed outside of California please check with your local licensing agency to to determine if they will accept these CEUs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer continuing education programming for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs.
