Mujerista in the Workplace
Presented by Patricia Arredondo, Ed.D.
Friday, November 8, 2024
9am-12pm CT
Event held in-person at the Village of Hoffman Estates (Hoffman Estates, IL).
Mujerista is a feminist concept grounded in equity, feminist thinking about “womanhood”, spirituality and a sense of self-advocacy or personal empowerment. Historically, Latinas have been the “silent” power of the household leading from a collectivistic, familia-centered relational approach. With each generation, Latinas are becoming more independent and self-directed. It is not easy to typecast Latinas today because their intersecting identities go beyond gender and culture to also reflect education, religion and spirituality, citizenship and different relationship statuses.
These evolving mujeres are complex which means putting Latinas into a “box” will likely lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. Perspective-taking about each Latina you know or meet in the workplace or clinical space, including yourself, is an increasing priority for clinicians and administrators. This interactive workshop will engage participants in awareness and knowledge-building to consistently apply Mujerista practices.
