Almost 90% of all state and federal prisons in the U.S. offer some form of substance abuse counseling, and one in eight prisoners have participated in a substance abuse treatment program while incarcerated. Evidence indicates that these programs can be successful in stopping prisoners’ substance abuse. However, studies show that the conditions in prison contribute to high rates of mental health problems while incarcerated, including the use of substances. This roundtable will discuss detecting warning signs, strategies on reducing substance use in prions, and approaches to substance use treatment in correctional settings.
