Mothers of a Dying Breed

October 14, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT

Roundtable Discussion

Paula Rainer, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, BH-TMH Assistant Professor, Counselor Education, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Washington DC Campus

Shinavia McKinney, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Student, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Washington, D.C. Campus

In 2020, African Americans as a collective group continue to carry the trauma experienced by their ancestors 400 years ago. When viewed by women of the same race, the burden is even greater when they give birth to a male child. Research has shown that protective factors can have positive outcomes on the psycho-social development of children by helping them successfully transition into adulthood, but these women fear that they are fighting a losing battle even when trying to provide a stable home and support. A critical variable to consider for this group, is how do they protect their child from systemic racism? This discussion aspires to identify cultural considerations that Counselors should be aware of for a new subgroup within the African American community, Mothers of African American boys.
