Workshop Description:

The presentation will provide a brief overview of the role of the Mandated Reporter, and the procedures by which to make a mandated report, per Illinois DCFS regulations. Most clinicians are familiar with these policies, but find the process frustrating, overwhelming, and anxiety-provoking, as it relates to our relationships with our clients. In addition, clinical and ethical challenges exist related to the disproportionality of family of color in the child welfare system (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2016).

The clinical implications of working with families throughout this process will be discussed: issues such as when and how to involve caregivers, how to support families during the process, and how to maintain the therapeutic relationship. Also discussed will be ways to differentiate between physical abuse and corporal punishment, in both the legal and clinical context, as well as suggestions for discussing this issue in work with children and families.

Learning Objectives:After attending this introductory-level workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify situations in which mandated reporting is required, and the practical steps necessary to make a report.

2. .Navigate the complexities of making a mandated report in the context of a therapeutic relationship, while considering cultural differences.

Professional Bio of Presenter Michelle Cutler, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor

Dr. Cutler has over 20 years of experience working with children and families, with a specialty in working in the field of abuse and trauma. She currently works in private practice, as well as serving as Associate Professor at the Chicago School, where she developed and has taught the course Child Trauma course for over ten years. Dr. Cutler helped to develop the mental health program at the Chicago Children’ Advocacy Center (CCAC), when the center first opened its doors in 2001, and has continued to provide therapy to children and families who have experienced sexual abuse. Throughout her career, Dr. Cutler has worked collaboratively with DCFS investigators and caseworkers, and provided training to multiple audiences on the topic of mandated reporting in a clinical setting.

This program meets APA’s continuing education STANDARD 1.2: Program content focuses on ethical, legal, statutory or regulatory policies, guidelines, and standards that impact psychological practice, education, or research.

MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs. Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hour of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. If you are licensed outside of California please check with your local licensing agency to to determine if they will accept these CEUs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer continuing education programming for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is an accredited or approved postsecondary institution that meets the requirements set forth in Sections 4980.54(f)(1), 4989.34, 4996.22(d)(1), or 4999.76(d) of the Code.

Participation Certificate. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is able to provide students and other participants who simply wish to have documentation of their attendance at the program a participation certificate.

Non Psychologists. Most licensing boards accept Continuing Education Credits sponsored by the American Psychological Association but non-psychologists are recommended to consult with their specific state-licensing board to ensure that APA-sponsored CE is acceptable.
